NEW BROCKTON — Friday night the Florala Wildcats traveled New Brockton to square off against the Class 2A Gamecocks in a preseason contest. Florala dropped the game, 35-0.
The senior laden Gamecocks proved why their preseason expectations were so high as they overpowered a very young group of Wildcats.
Florala opened the game on offense and began to pound the ball down the field. Junior quarterback Zac Fleming and Sophomore fullback Brock Goodwin took turns picking up good yardage. The Wildcats’ drive stalled, however, at mid-field to force a punt.
New Brockton’s first possession began at its own 20. Two plays later, the Gamecocks were in scoring position at Florala’s 8-yard line. Florala’s defense tightened but three plays later New Brockton’s Kevin McNair scored from 1 yard out. The extra point was good and the Gamecocks would have the only lead they would need at 7-0.
McNair went to work again with two big runs, including another touchdown. The extra point was good to give New Brockton a 14-0 lead.
The Florala Wildcats will travel to Beatrice next Friday night to face J.F. Shields.
