Hendersons endow scholarships

LBW Community College students will benefit from two perpetual scholarship funds established by Andalusia’s Frank Henderson and family.

The Hendersons endowed two scholarships with the LBWCC Foundation, one in memory of James F. Henderson, father, grandfather and founder of Henderson Sewing Machines; and one in memory of Melissa Grimes Henderson, wife, mother and teacher.

“My dad had little opportunity for an education while growing up and always placed high priority on educating his children, grandchildren and staff,” said Frank Henderson.

“His efforts resulted in a multi-million dollar corporation operating around the world in more than 40 countries,” he said. “So, what father started on Aug. 17, 1950, by walking 12 ½ miles down hot, dusty roads to work, has now led to an opportunity for future generations to get an education that he never had the opportunity to get.”

Henderson said LBWCC always held a special place in his late wife’s heart.

“My wife started her college education at LBW Community College while still in high school,” he said. “She continued at Auburn University, receiving an undergraduate degree, then Troy University for a teaching degree and master’s in education. Gaining an education and teaching children were important parts of Melissa’s life. We endow this scholarship to perpetuate her life’s work.”

These donations will make a difference in the lives of many people, said LBWCC President Dr. Herb Riedel.

“We are extremely grateful for the generosity of this family in establishing two endowed scholarships,” he said. “While the endowed amounts will remain in perpetuity, investment earnings from these funds will provide financial support each year toward tuition and fees for students attending LBWCC.”

A full endowment through the LBWCC Foundation is $25,000 and can be established at any time to recognize an individual or company, or as a memorial. The Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-deductible organization.
