The Andress family genealogy will be continued in today’s column. The ancestry and descendants of Isaac Andress will be featured. He was a brother to the Joseph Andress whose lineage was covered in last week’s column. Isaac and Joseph were the sons of Joseph Andress, Sr. and his wife, Ann. The earlier generations from England to American were outlined in the previous column.

Isaac Andress was born between 1770 and 1776 in North Carolina. The name of his first wife is not known, but the two of them had the following four children: Stephen; Samuel; Sarah, m. John Bell; and Nancy, m. Thomas Morgan. His second marriage occurred in South Carolina where he was wed to a widow, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Hamilton) Durant.

Six additional children were born to this second union: Robert W., b. 1814, m. 1842 Nancy Splawn; Thomas H., b. 1816; Francis Pringleton, b. 1818, d. 1880, m. Mary Lee Carroll; Joseph Milton, b. 1820, d. 1880, m. 1846 Charlotte Caroline Granger; Elizabeth Henrietta, b. 1822, single; and Caroline Isabella, b. 1824, d. 1909, m. 1844 Samuel Brown Carroll. At least the first child was born in Sumter County, and the last four were born in Clarendon County, S.C.

Isaac was one of the three sons of Joseph and Ann Andress to migrate to the State of Alabama. He chose to settle in the Banks community of Pike County, about 100 miles east of where his brothers, Stephen and Joseph, settled. Isaac moved his family to this area during the early 1820s and purchased land for engaging in farming.

Isaac remained in Pike County until his death on Aug. 7, 1841, at which time he was buried in the Bethel Church Cemetery, one mile south of Banks, Ala. Family records are available through Isaac’s family Bible and Pike County Court Records.

The oldest son by Isaac’s second wife, Robert W. Andress, was married in 1842 in Banks, to Nancy Splawn. They moved to Arkansas, and Robert changed the spelling of his name to Anders. They reared nine children there in Jersey, Ark.

No more is known about the next son, Thomas H. Andress, but the third son, Francis Pringleton Andress, and his wife, Mary Lee Carroll, resided in Pike County and reared a large family of 15 children: Isaac Nathan, b. 1842, m. 1868 Sarah Malinda Livingston; John W., b. 1844, d. 1862 as prison of war in Michigan; Samuel J., b. 1846, d. 1927, m. 1872 Louisa McKerley; Malcomb T., b. 1898, d. 1883, m. 1877 Sarah Fannie Carter; Francis M., b. 1849, d. 1920, m. 1879 Amanda Edna Gibson; Martha M., b. 1850, d. 1855; James Benjamin, b. 1851, d. 1934, m. 1879 Phredonia Whitehurst; Caroline E., b. 1855, d. 1910 single; Sarah A., b. 1856, d. 1910, single; Martha Mary, b. 1858, m. J.D. Whitehurst; Nancy E., b.&d. 1860; Maggie B., b. 1863, d. 1909, single; D.M. (male), b.&d. 1863; John William, b. 1856, d. 1952, single; and Robert L, b. 1868, d. 1954, m. 1915 Poka Mott.

Some of Francis Pringleton Andress’s grandchildren include the following children of Isaac Nathan Andress: Francis Samuel. B. 1870, d. 1955, Tommie Sue Daniels; James Malcomb, b. 1872, d. 1961, m. Clifford Owens; Dr. David Gustavus, b. 1875, d. 1958; and Elizabeth, b. 1877, m. W.E. Fleming.

Francis P.’s son, Samuel J. Andress, reared two children: Huron Amanda, b. 1872, d. 1901, m. Tom Watkins; and Liddie. His son, Malcolm T. Andress, had a son whom he named Malcomb. His son, Francis M. Andress, had three children: Mamie Elizabeth, b. 1880, d. 1956, m. John Burton Malone; Franklin Anthony, b. 1884, d. 1918, m. Gussie Knight; and Mattie Belle, b. 1888, m. William Foster Marsh. His son, James Benjamin Andress, had the following children: Emma Pringle, b. 1879, d. 1921, m. Jack Chancellor; Era Taplin, b. 1881, m. Tom Hendricks; Lela Ann, b. 1883, d. 1961, m. Sellers Wilke; Mary Mack, b. 1885, m. Danis Curtis; Dorinda Wilkson, b. 1887, m. M. Buford Hussey; Benjamin Franklin, b. 1890, d. 1962, m. Clema Hudson; and James William, b. 1896, d. 1954, m. Florence Morgan. His youngest son, Robert L. Andress, had two children: Joseph Phillipi, b.&d. 1917; and Mary Lee, b. 1916, m. Allen Clyde Moss.

Isaac Andress’s next son, Joseph Milton Andress, was married to Charlotte Caroline Granger. They reared the following five children: Isaac C., b. 1847, d. 1909, m. 1871 Apolona Law; Mary C., m. ? Faircloth; Martha L., b. 1851; Henrietta, b. 1853; and John Hamilton, b. 1854.

John Milton’s oldest son, Isaac C. Andress, was born in 1847 in Pike County, Ala. He died in 1910 in Coffee County and was buried in the New Home Cemetery of that county. He was married to Apolonia Law in 1871 in Pike County. She was born in 1851, and at her death she was buried beside her husband. They reared the following five children: James Monroe, b. 1874, d. 1846, m. Dora Arant; Robert Lee “Bob,” b. 1876, d. 1949, m. Ella Frances Blair; Joseph W. “Joe,” b. 1880, d. 1925, m. Willie Tomlin/Tomberlin; Permelia or Pamela C., b. 1883, d. 1965, m. William Moore; and John Wilbur “Webb,” b. 1885, d. 1982, m. Lizzie Estelle Blair.

The oldest son, James Monroe, and wife had three children: Isaac Wesley, m. Burlye Stephens; Lee Brosco, b. 1905, m. Evelyn Cardwell; and Carrie, b. 1910, m. (1) J.D. Williams (2) A.J. Bedsole. The second son, Robert Lee Andress, and wife had five children: Emma, b. 1900; J.D. b. 1904, d. 1964, m. Mary Winnie Crosby; James Shirley, b. 1902, m. Ruby Beckham; Irene, b. 1908, d. 1933; and Robert Grady, b. 1913, m. Ruth Sessions. The son Joseph Andress and wife had two daughters: Mary and Lessie.

The youngest son, John Wilbur “Webb” Andress, was married circa 1908 in Coffee County to Lizzie Estelle Blair (1900-1949), also a native of Pike County. Webb was a bus driver in Coffee County in the 1940s. At their deaths, they were buried in the Brooklyn Cemetery in that county. They reared the following four children: Pearl Mae, b. 1909, d. 1975, m. Mack Barnes; Foy, b. 1912, m. Orrell Mount; Myrtle Lee, b. 1915, m. Dalton Bass; John Wilma, b. 1924, d. 1930.

A few of the descendants in this family moved into Covington County and would be related to those covered in last week’s column. Extensive family data have been compiled on the Andress family, so anyone interested should find considerable assistance. The Covington Rifles Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will be meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, in the Dixon Memorial Room of the Andalusia Public Library for its annual Christmas meeting. Members are requested to bring a “finger-food” dish and invite guests. Members of the local United Daughters of the Confederacy will be special quests.
