Andalusia’s Shane Dorsey ran a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 6:36 left in the first half to help lead his team to a 22-6 victory over visiting B.C. Rain Friday night.

After the touchdown, Andalusia scored a two-point conversion when Kenneth Chambers snuck in the end zone from three yards out to give his team an eight-point lead.

Before the momentum shifted clearly in Andalusia’s favor, play was stopped due to inclement weather for 1 hour, 31 minutes with 11:47 left in the second quarter.

Andalusia (2-0, 1-0 in Class 4A, Region 1) got on board early in the first quarter on a three-yard touchdown run from Marcus Jones to make it 6-0.

Rain answered with its only touchdown with 6:54 left in the half. Michael Nevels ran it in from 14 yards out for the tie.

A relieved Andalusia coach Brian Seymore said he is proud to get the first region win.

“It’s good to get off to a good start in our region,” Seymore said. “To go 1-0 and especially in these conditions.

“I was proud of our kids even though we took an early lead,” he said. “They bounced back and scored and we had them on a two-point conversion. Then, we had them on a kickoff and Shane Dorsey made a big play for us.”

Seymore added that the defense executed well despite the slippery conditions.

“That two-point conversion was huge, but once again our defense was solid,” he said. “We pieced enough good things together on offense and made some things happen. These were some wildcat formations and we threw it in there.”

Things started to fall apart for B.C. Rain as Andalusia’s defense stepped it up and held the visiting team to 29 yards rushing in the second half.

“Coach (Marshall) Locke did a good job on defense,” Seymore said. “He had them run to the football. It’s just back and defeating blocks and gang tackling. Our people did a good job. We blew an assignment over there, but as a whole I’m proud of our kids and coaches because they’ve stuck together and put a good plan in and carried it out. We’re 2-0 and it feels good to be 1-0 in the region.”

Andalusia scored its final touchdown for the night early in the third when T.K. Bullard carried the ball 10 yards for the score with 5:44 left. For the two-point conversion, Bullard passed to David Mahaffey from three yards to bring his team’s lead to 16 points and the win.
