Covington County’s annual Wild Game Cook-Off, benefiting the Alabama Wildlife Federation, is set for Thurs., Nov. 29.

Organizer Hunter Grimes said the number of participating cook teams in this year’s event already outnumbers previous years.

Longtime participants Wild Boar, Smoke and Ashes, Massey Automotive, Camp Creek Cooks and Southeast Alabama Gas District are all participating. One of the new teams for this year is the LBW Culinary School.

Cook teams can compete in the categories of game, fowl and fish. Those who enter are asked to provide to the public at least 100 bite-sized samples. A first, second and third place will be awarded for each category. In addition, there will be prizes for best overall, best presentation, and a people’s choice award.

There is no entry fee for cook teams, who provide their own sample items and compete for a chance to win prizes. For every five teams that enter, Grimes said, the Wildlife Federation will give away tickets for Talladega’s spring race.

The cook-off event also features a silent auction and a raffle. There will be live musical entertainment, as well as beverages.
