An Opp businessman is charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, Drug Task Force Commander Mark Odom said Wednesday.

Opp police officers attempted to stop Jeffery Dewayne Johnson, the 36-year-old owner of an oil and lubrication service, for a minor traffic violation on Monday.

“A pursuit began, but Johnson eventually fled on foot,” Odom said. “ And since (Johnson) was known to (Opp) Officers Ian McCullouch and Shawn Bentley, they elected not to pursue.”

An inventory of Johnson’s vehicle yielded a bounty of meth-related items and finished product, and DTF agents were contacted, Odom said.

“We found finished product, pills and the remnants of two different extractions,” he said. “Basically, it was his leftover trash from a meth lab, but it was enough to charge him with.”

Johnson was located inside an Opp residence Tuesday afternoon and charged with two counts of second-degree manufacturing of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is currently being held in the Covington County Jail under a $470,000 bond.
