Compensation is now on its way for a select group of Opp educators who helped save the system the cost of an additional teacher.

The Opp City Board of Education on Tuesday voted to amend the supplement schedule for one-time for certain positions.

Teac-hers who took on additional responsibilities such as coaching or yearbook receive additional pay.

Superintendent Michael Smithart said that $1,000 was added to the varsity sports supplement and $500 was added to the middle school and yearbook supplements.

The board approved the following changes:

• Increased the varsity assistant football coach supplement to $5,635;

• Increased the middle school head coach supplement to $3,590;

• Increased the middle school assistant football coach supplement to $2,045;

• Increased the “middle school only” assistant supplement to $1,545;

• Increased the girls basketball coach supplement to $2,045;

• Increased the varsity cheerleading coach supplement to $3,060; and

• Increased the OHS yearbook sponsor supplement to $1,250.

“When you ask these people to work extra for us, it’s a small price to pay,” Smithart said.

Smithart said the plan is to issue a check for the supplement in November.

Board member Cheryl Graves asked Smithart and Chief Financial Officer Linda Banks to issue the supplement as a separate check.

“As a former educator, I know teachers typically see more on the check if it’s separate,” she said.

Smithart said the increases are only for the 2010-2011 fiscal year and the salary schedule will revert back to the amount approved by the board in September 2009.
