Clarke County High School spoiled Andalusia’s Homecoming party with a 9-6 victory Friday night.

In a very physical, defensive game each team managed only one touchdown.

The difference in the game came down to two special team plays. The first came on a blocked extra point attempt following Andalusia’s only touchdown. This left the Bulldogs down 7-6. The second came when CCHS blocked a punt causing the ball to go out of the back of the end zone for a safety giving CCHS a 9-6 lead.

CCHS put the first points on the board in the second quarter when junior quarterback Matthew Harvey connected with sophomore wideout Jacory Snell from seven yards out. Following the extra point, the Bulldogs of Clarke County held a 7-0 lead.

Andalusia put up its only points of the game on the very next drive as junior quarterback Michael McCalman found sophomore running back Devante Jackson for a 25- yard touchdown pass. CCHS blocked the extra point leaving them with a 7-6 lead.

CCHS picked up two more points before the first half ended when Andalusia’s punter Jud Rogers, who backed up in his own end zone to punt, fielded a high snap that didn’t allow him enough time to get the punt of cleanly. The punt was blocked immediately as the ball hit his cleat sending it out of the end zone for the a safety for a score of 9-6 which CCHS would hold for the victory.

The Andalusia defense looked tough and physical all night even after being on the field most of the night. The defense accounted for six punts and four turnovers. Montell Lee had a big night defensively, making several key stops and an interception.

The Andalusia offense was a different story giving up a few crucial turnovers and some untimely false start penalties. “Execution! That was a big factor tonight,” said head coach Brian Seymore. “ Not staying on our blocks long enough. We didn’t do the things we needed to offensively.”

Next week the Bulldogs (4-2) are on the road against Wilcox Central.
