Straughn shuts out Calhoun

LETOHATCHEE – Straughn spoiled Calhoun’s homecoming Friday night, shutting out its opponent 49-0.
The visiting Tigers led 36-0 at halftime, and used a balanced attack. Straughn scored two passing touchdowns, five rushing touchdowns and a safety.
“I was glad to see better passing, because that was what we were working on this week in practice,” Straughn coach Trent Taylor said.
Straughn improved to 4-3 overall and 4-1 in Class 3A, Region 1. Calhoun fell to 1-6, 1-4.
The visiting Tigers broke onto the board early when Kaleb Green caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Josh Dewrell with 9:47 left in the first quarter.
Straughn’s Lee Tanner later tackled a Calhoun player in the end zone for a safety. Dewrell ran for a 2-yard touchdown with 6:34 left in the quarter, putting Straughn up 16-0.
Zac Turvin caught a short pass from Dewrell and then broke away from the defense for an 86-yard touchdown reception with 4:32 left in the first quarter.
Straughn added two more touchdowns in the second quarter — a 31-yard run by Dewrell and a 20-yard run by Eric Samuel.
Straughn continued to add points in the second half. Dewrell ran for a 3-yard touchdown with 8:24 left in the third quarter, and the extra point failed as Straughn went up, 42-0.
Turvin ran for a 12-yard touchdown late in the third quarter to seal the win for Straughn.
The Tigers return home for a tough two-game stretch to close out region play. Straughn faces T.R. Miller on Fri., Oct. 16, and then hosts Luverne on Fri., Oct. 23.
Asked about the upcoming opponent, Taylor said, “It’s T.R. Miller. What else can I say?”
