Area non-profits got collective $35,000 boost in revenue from Andalusia Health Services Inc. board Tuesday.

Some eight agencies received money from the organization, which was funded by the sale of the then locally-owned hospital. A board now manages interest earned the proceeds of that sale to enhance medical care in Covington County.

President Ivan Bishop said the group was proud to give back to the community.

“These groups do so much for our area, and it’s our pleasure to be able to give to them,” Bishop said.

Receiving funds were the Andalusia Lions Club, the county chapter of the American Red Cross; the county health department; United Fund; South Central Mental Health Board and its intensive outpatient substance abuse classes; the United Methodist Children’s Home; and Meredith’s Miracles.

Each year, the group distributes funds not only to area agencies, but also provides scholarships to students entering the medical field. In return for scholarship money, students sign contracts indicating they will work in Covington County for one year for every year they receive scholarship assistance.

Last year, the group distributed $160,000 back to the community.
