THE REV. WILLIAM GOODSON

The Rev. William Goodson, 96, of the Harmony Community, died Wed., Sept. 20, 2010, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held on Sun., Oct. 3, from the Harmony Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the church from 1:30 Sunday until the time of the service.

The Rev. Goodson began preaching at churches in south Alabama in 1947. He served as pastor or interim pastor in the Covington Baptist Association, Oakey Ridge Baptist Church, Harmony Baptist Church, Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Calvary Baptist Church, Hopewell Baptist Church, Beulah Baptist Church, Sweet Home Baptist Church, Mt. Gilead Baptist Church and Buck Creek Baptist Church.

In the Coffee County Baptist Association, he served as pastor at Glenwood and Rutledge. In the Butler Baptist Association, he served as pastor of Central Church. He was pastor of Northside Baptist Church in the Salem-Troy Baptist Association, and in the Sardis Baptist Association, he was pastor of New Chapel and Pine Level churches and was the DOM of this association for 15 years.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Hilda Goodson; three daughters, Diane (Clark) McKinley of Monroeville, Phyllis (Ronald) Grimes of Andalusia and Lynn (Paul) Lloyd of Rapid City, S.D.; one grandson, Derek (Heather) Grimes of Washington; four granddaughters, Christa Grimes, Ann McKinley and Summerlin and Emily Lloyd; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nell; his parents and all eight of his siblings.

Pallbearers will be William Blocker, Luke Gingpho, Josh Till, Paul Moody, Donnie Williams and Steve Dye.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Harmony Cemetery Fund, 20932 Cty. Rd. 70, Andalusia, AL 36421, or to the charity of one’s choice.

GERTRUDE PAULINE FRAZIER PATE

Gertrude Pauline Frazier Pate, 91, of Andalusia, died Wed., Sept. 29, 2010, in a local nursing home.

Funeral services were held on Oct. 1 from the Foreman Funeral Home chapel. Interment will follow in the Andalusia Memorial Cemetery.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth and husband Willie Sasser of Opp; two sons, Aaron (Evelyn) Pate and Ronnie (Jennie) Pate, all of Andalusia; a daughter-in-law, Roberta Pate of Winter Haven, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; and a special friend, Kathleen Rogers of Opp.

She was preceded in death by her son, Doyle Pate.

Pallbearers were Kim Pate, Tony Pate, Josh Martin, Chase Nolen, Braxton Moore and David Whitehurst.

JEANNE “MIMI” OPHELIA CHESSER HINTON

Jeanne “Mimi” Ophelia Chesser Hinton, 84, left this earthly world on Sept. 29, 2010. She was born in Seale, Ala., on Sept. 14, 1926, and was a Daytona Beach resident since 1949.

Through-out her life, she positively enhanced the lives of so many including her family, friends, neighbors as a member of Highlands Presbyterian Church, Port Orange First United Methodist Church and the Love Circle; a high priestess of The Ladies Oriental Shrine; president of Palmetto Juniors; Lady Commodear at Halifax River Yacht Club and through numerous other community service organizations.

She began her formal education in Red Level, continued it at the University of Alabama and completed it with a masters degree in home economics education at Florida State University.

As a home economics teacher, she positively enriched the lives of hundreds of students throughout Volusia County, Fla., for 28 years before she retired. She then volunteered for 20 years in her daughter’s primary classrooms.

With a twinkle in her eye, Jeanne would claim she was from “L.A.” – short for Lower Alabama. She represented her heritage by always conducting herself as the epitome of a genteel Southern lady – a real steel magnolia.

She was married to the late John Truitt Hinton for 49 years and was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis V. Chesser and Bessie Cordelia Hicks Chesser; her sister, Gayle Nicholson, and husband, Jerry Nicholson.

She is survived by her brother, the Rev. Lewis V. Chesser and his wife, Maizie Chesser; her children, Dr. Jeanne “Penny” Wetzler and her husband Tom Wetzler, John Truitt Hinton Jr. and his wife, Darlene Hinton, and Kelly Hinton McWilliams and her husband Scott McWilliams; six grandchildren, Katherine Christine Bellin, Miranda Wetzler, John Lewis McEver, Kelsey Hinton, Ashley Beck, James Ian McWilliams and Andrew McWilliams; great-granddaughter, Emerson “Emmi” Bellin, along with numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Spending time with grandchildren, reading, sewing, knitting, playing the organ, collecting music boxes and porcelain dolls and traveling were favorites among her hobbies.

Visitation will be held Fri., Oct. 8, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Baggett and Summers Funeral Home in Daytona Beach, Fla.

A celebration of life will be held on Sat., Oct. 9, at 10 a.m. at the Port Orange First United Methodist Church, located at 305 Dunlawton Ave, Port Orange, Fla.
