A number of descendants in the Money family resided in the Rose Hill and Opp communities of Covington County.

Three Money brothers and a sister and their families moved there circa 1910 from Pike County. William Lewis “Bill, Jeremiah “Jerry,” and James Elexander along with their sister, Lenora “Nora” (Money) Parker homesteaded farms adjacent to each other.

The earliest ancestor in this family found by this writer was Washington Money, and one record listed him as William John Money.

He was born in 1750 in North Carolina. Among his children was a son named Jacob Joel Money who was born in 1780 in Columbus, Polk County, North Carolina.

He was married there in 1809 to Dorcas Tabitha ? who was born in 1790 and died in 1860,

Jacob Joel Money, Sr. and Tabitha reared the following children: Dorcas, b. 1817, d. 1860, m. 1834 John Rollo; Meredith Mirada, b. ca 1818; Benjamin G., b. 1820; George I., b. 1821; and Jacob Joel Jr., b. 1823.

Dorcas Money was married to John Rollo, son of John H. Rollo who was the son of William Rollo. John was born in 1800 in Marlboro County, S.C., and he and wife, Dorcas, died in 1860 in Montgomery County.

They reared the following nine children: William, b. ca 1836, m. Frances Boyd; John Wesley, b. 1838, d. 1913 Ga.; Jesse J., b. ca 1841; Mary C., b. ca 1843; Matilda Jane, b. ca 1846; Rebecca E., b. ca 1849; Robert Lawrence, b. ca 1851; Benjamin E., b. 1853, d. 1923 Tex.; and Martha, b. ca 1859.

Jacob Joel Sr.’s youngest son, Jacob Joel Money, Jr., was married in 1856 in Montgomery County,, to Martha Browder (1837-1910), who appears to be the daughter of William and Ellen (Rollo) Browder. Joel Jr. was born in North Carolina, and Martha was born in Alabama.

Joel Jr. moved at an earlier age with his family to Montgomery County, Ala. and later, to Pike County. Joel Jr. and Martha died within a year of each other and were buried in the Oak Grove Methodist Church Cemetery in Pike County.

A few years after his marriage, Joel Money, Jr. enlisted to serve in the Confederate Army at Pollard, Ala., as a private in Company B., 61st. Alabama Infantry Regiment. He was paroled in Montgomery on April 9, 1865. In 1907, just two years before his death, he was listed on the Census of Confederate Soldiers residing in Pike County.

Jacob Joel Money, Jr. and his wife, Martha, reared the following children: William Lewis “Bill,” b. 1857, d. 1949, m. 1885 Irena Youngblood (1872-1935); Jeremiah “Jerry,” b. 1858, d. 1990, m. 1886 Sarah Elizabeth Vincent (1879-1966); Mary Elizabeth “Mollie,” b. 1862, d. 1922; Rachel, b. 1864; Rosie Ann, b. ca 1865, d. 1914, m. 1890 James Francis “Hemp” Kelley (1850-1941); Lee, b. 1865, d. 1916, m. R.E. ? (1854-1920); Sarah Sophronia, b. 1867, d. 1945, m. 1892 James Lafayette Houston (1867-1940); Lenora “Nora,” b. 1870, d. 1960, m. John Henry Parker (1872-1904); James Elexander, b. 1873, d. 1955, m. 1906 Berta Lee Nunery (1888-1968); and John Thomas, b. 1878, d. 1941.

Jacob Joel Money Jr. and his wife, Martha, also reared two boys who were believed to be their nephews. Vernon Ray, b. 1885, and Earnest Ray, b. 1887, appear to be the sons of James and Ella (Allen) Ray.

The oldest son, William Lewis “Bill” Money, eventually settled in the Rose Hill community of Covington County, where he and his wife reared a large family of 10 children. He was married to Irena Youngblood, daughter of James F. and Sarah Marie (Barnett) Youngblood. Their children were Martha Ellen, b. 1890, d. 1974; William Henry, b. 1892, d. 1978; Beckie Ann, b. 1895, d. 1974; Hattie Bess, b. 1897, d. 1982; Samuel Jones, b. 1898, d. 1979; Jacob Ezra, b. 1901, d. 1989; Janie Estelle, b. 1903, d. 1965; Clora Irene, b. 1907, d. 1912; Ara Alice, b. 1911, d. 1987; and Isaac “Newt,” b. 1912, d. 2009. Although, Bill is listed as dying in Crenshaw County, he was buried in Rose Hill.

The second son, Jeremiah M. “Jerry” Money, was married to Sarah Elizabeth Vincent in 1886. They resided most of their years in the Rose Hill and Gantt communities. Jerry eventually lived in Snowdoun, but he and Sarah were buried in the Macedonia Methodist Church Cemetery in Rose Hill. They reared the following 11 children: William M. “Willie,” b. 1887, d. 1937; Charles Washington “Charlie,” b. 1889, d. 1964; Franklin, b. 1891, d. 1894; Joseph “Joe,” b. 1894, d. 1973; Clanty D., b. 1897, d. 1933; George M., b. 1899, d. 1978; Nora, b. 1901, d. 1972; Dora, b. 1903, d. 1966; Beatrice, b. 1906, d. 1998; Ray, b. 1909, d. 1911; and Mattie Ruth, b. 1913, d. 1973.

The daughter, Rosie Ann Money, was married in 1886 in Pike County to James Francis “Hemp” Kelly, and they lived around the Tillman’s Mill area of Coffee County. They reared the following children: Edgar, b. 1887; Carrie L., b. 1889; W. Frank, b. 1891, d. 1919; Nora, b. 1893; Walter Shelton, b. 1895, d. 1965; Irie Lee, b. 1899; and Fulton, b. 1900.

The daughter, Sarah Saphronia Money, was married in 1892 to James Lafatte “Fate” Houston. They reared the following nine children: Lena, b. 1892, d. 1983; Mary Ellen “Little Moll,” b. 1894, d. 1977; Quintie Leslie “Quint,” b. 1896, d. 1986; Ervine, b. 1897; Jimmie L., b. 1897; Ida Bell, b. 1899, d. 1918; Effie, b. 1901, d. 1983; Lottie, b. 1904, d. 1983; and Nellie, b. 1910, d. 1976.

The daughter, Lenora “Nora” Money, was married in 1894 to John Henry Parker. They resided in the Rose Hill community and were buried in the Pilgrims’ Rest Cemetery at their deaths. The only identified child for them was a son, Buron J., b. 1902, m. Lelia Ident Cooper.

Next to the youngest son, James Elexander Money, moved to Covington County circa 1910. His brothers, William Lewis and Jeremiah, and his sister, Nora, and families moved at the same time.

They all homesteaded farms in the Rose Hill community adjacent to each other. Elexander had married only a few years earlier in 1906 to Berta Lee Nunery, daughter of William Barto and Artie Melissa “Missie” (Allen) Nunery. Elexander was a farmer and Berta was a homemaker and seamstress. In 1926, they purchased the Tump Childre farm in the Valley Grove community, and they lived out their lives there. At their deaths, they were buried in the Mt. Gilliad Baptist Church Cemetery in Rose Hill, the community where they had reared their children.

Elexander and Berta reared the following six children: William Grady, b. 1907, d. 1999, m. Clara Bell Andrews; Caron Mae, b. 1909, m. Robert Chalma Johnson; Eleanor LaFoye, b. 1911, d. 1958, m. Allen Ezra Brown; Mary Zelda, b. 1913, d. 2010, m. Marion Hubert Medley (1911-1981); James Arnold, b. 1916, d. 2004, m. Mary Edna Blocker (1923-1972); and Thelma Maxine, b. 1923, d. 2005, m. Robert Mack “Bob Mack” Kelsoe. All of these children with the exception of one served as a teacher. Caron Mae is 103 years old and resides in good health at The Woodmore, an assisted living facility in Opp.

Although the Money name is rarely heard today in this area, there are a number of descendants who still reside locally. One of these, Caron Mae (Money) Johnson, submitted a family story, which was published in The Heritage of Covington County, Alabama.
