A former Andalusia resident faces five years of probation for failing to register as a sex offender in Connecticut.

George Patrick Perkert, 44, previously of Bridgeport, Conn., and Andalusia, was also sentenced Tuesday to approximately 22 months in prison but given credit for time served since he has been imprisoned since his 2010 arrest.

According to court documents and statements made in court, in October 2000, Perkert was convicted in New York of first-degree sexual abuse.

Prior to his release from prison in 2003, Perkert was informed of his registration obligations under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.

In March 2006, he was convicted in Connecticut Superior Court of second-degree burglary. While incarcerated, Perkert registered as a sex offender with the Connecticut Sex Offender Registry. Following his release in September 2008, Perkert lived in a halfway house in Bridgeport, Conn., to serve a four-year term of special parole.

He initially complied with Connecticut Sex Offender Registry requirements, but failed to respond to an address verification request that was mailed to the halfway house on Oct. 2, 2009.

Perkert was arrested on Oct. 31, 2010, by members of the U.S. Marshals Service in Andalusia, where he had been living since July 7, 2009. Perkert failed to notify officials in Connecticut of his change of address, and he failed to register as a sex offender in Alabama.

Perkert pleaded guilty on Jan. 6 to one count of failure to register with the state sex offender registry.

He also faces parole violation proceedings in state court.
