Reduced-cost counseling assistance not just for Baptists

Those in need of counseling services can look to the Covington Baptist Association for assistance.
There are two counselors now taking appointments through the CBA, said Byron Lambert, CBA administrative assistant.
“Most of the time our 54 churches refer clients to us, but we do take public clients,” he said. “These services are not for Baptists only, either. It’s available to anyone who has a need.”
Lambert said services are available for assistance with anger management issues, marriage problems and family counseling, and services are available for children.
“Our counselors do not prescribe any medications,” he said. “It’s all faith-based counseling.”
Lambert said there is a great demand in the area for these types of services. There is an $80 per hour fee; however, the organization does work with families on a sliding scale based on the total household income, to assist with the costs.
“Other places charge in the neighborhood of $150 an hour, so we feel our rate is comparable,” he said.
Services are provided by Alicia Lewis of Dothan and Dr. Tommy Smith of Brewton.
Lewis provides services on Wednesday; Smith on Mondays, and each at the CBA office located on U.S. Hwy. 84.
Counselors see six patients a day, Lambert said.
“So there might be a bit of wait to get an appointment, but we ask that clients be patient,” he said. “We’re here to help.”
To schedule an appointment, call 334-222-3009 or speak with any pastor at a local Baptist Church for further assistance.
