Andalusia’s Derrick King rushed for 183 yards on 12 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead his team to a 28-0 victory over Luverne Friday night at Bulldogs Stadium in Andalusia.

“I’m proud of our guys,” AHS coach Brian Seymore said. “I thought our offensive line did a great job blocking. We moved Derrick King — he was more of a slot guy last year — we moved him to tailback, and he made some plays for us.”

King rushed 11 times in the first half alone for 146 yards. He scored all four touchdowns in the second quarter.

Rafeal Sims also had a good night rushing 46 yards on seven caries.

King’s first touchdown came from 14 yards out with 11:54 left in the second quarter. The PAT attempt was good by the foot of Andalusia’s Courson Hopkins.

The Bulldog defense held Luverne on a three-and-out in the Tigers’ first offensive possession of the second quarter.

On Andalusia’s second possession of the second quarter, King scored from the four-yard line with 7:14 left on the clock, and Hiren Patel secured the 14th point of the night with the extra point.

The momentum kept going Andalusia’s way late in the second quarter when the Bulldogs recovered a fumble from the Luverne 44-yard line with 4:34 left in the half.

This time from 31 yards out, King slipped through Luverne’s defenders to find the end zone for a third time with 2:19 left in the second quarter. Hopkins took care of the PAT, and that put the Bulldogs’ lead to 21-0.

The Andalusia defense held Luverne to another three-and-out. Andalusia senior linebacker Johnnie Jones had seven solo tackles for the night.

By half time, King had scored his fourth touchdown, again from 31 yards out, and Patel secured the 28th point for the Bulldogs.

In the first half, Andalusia amassed 230 yards, compared to Luverne’s 38.

Seymore said the victory Friday night was a “team victory.”

“I feel like as a team, it was a team victory,” he said. “The coaches and players did well, and did a good job. I’m proud of what we accomplished (Friday night).

“The season starts for real next week,” he said. “We’re going to get back in there, and make the adjustments on the things we need to work on.”

Seymore said the adjustments he’ll make before playing Carroll-Ozark next week will be mainly focused on defense and the secondary.

“There are some things that we’ll shore up,” he said. “Carroll is more of a spread team. We’re definitely going to have to be sound in our secondary next week. I don’t really know what to expect. We’ll get a good plan together, and we’ll come out next week and be ready to play.”

The Bulldogs will hit the road to play Carroll-Ozark next Friday night. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
