One DuBose family came to Covington County circa 1928 from Pike County. Freling Hyson “Dick” DuBose, who was born in 1897, moved his young family to a farm in the Pleasant Home community. He reared his family and lived out his life in that location. This writer recalls riding a school bus past his well maintained home and farm during the early 1950s. Another attraction was his herd of sheep grazing in a spacious pecan orchard.
Freling DuBose was a natural with plants. He operated a nursery from which he sold trees, shrubs, etc. to customers from all over. Through this activity he had a beautifully landscaped property. It is interesting that his sister, Hazel DuBose Shreve Cater, moved to this area and resided in the Town of Andalusia. She is well remembered as caring for a most attractive yard around her home on Sanford Road.
The earliest Dubose ancestor of this line known to this writer is Samuel DuBose who was born in 1809 in South Carolina. He was married in 1833 to Lucretia Hennigan, a native of South Carolina as well. They eventually made their way to the Town of Troy in Pike County.
