BETTY SPIVEY
Betty Spivey of Opp passed away Mon., Aug. 2, 2010, in Opp’s Mizell Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., today Thurs., Aug. 4, at Keahey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hubert Spann officiating and special music by Ellan Spann, Peggy
Chestain and Larry Spann. Burial will follow in Mt. Gilead Cemetery with Keahey Funeral Home directing.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Ray McCart of Opp; one brother, Bobby Ray Stanton of Opp; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Oliver Thornton and Margaret and Larry Jeter of Kingston, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Emily Spivey, Austin McCart and Sarah McCart.
WILLIAM GENE “BILLY” THAMES
William Gene “Billy” Thames of Evergreen passed away Tues., Aug. 3, 2010, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Fri., Aug. 6, at Old Town Baptist Church in Evergreen with the Rev. Alfred Ikner and the Rev. Douge Lambert officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. tonight at Keahey Funeral Home.
Survivors include his stepsons, Richard Daniel and Sandy Liles of Opp and James Wayland Liles of Minnesota; stepdaughter, Melissa Dianne Liles of Andalusia; brothers, Donald Richard and Angela Thames of Evergreen and John Eisiner and Lenny Robert Thames of Evergreen; sisters, Kathy Beth Thames and Tammy Marie Davis Leach, both of Evergreen; five grandchildren, Taylor Ann Guillotte, Ashley Lynn Guillotte, Hannah Eve Guillotte, Nicholas Liles and Shelby Liles, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in his wife, Shelby Jean Tillman Thames; mother, Ruby Alice Wallace Thames; father, Willie Gene Thames; brothers, Kenneth Joseph Thames and Ronald David Thames; and companion, Nancy Holley Alexander.
Pallbearers will be Murry Thames, Oscar Thames, Gary Leach, Douglas Hartin Jr., Steven Lawson and Alvis Griffin.
GLADYS OTT BENNETT
Gladys Bennett, 93, died on Fri., July 30, 2010, in Atlanta, Ga.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church, Talladega, Ala., on Sat., August 7, at 10 a.m.; Usrey Funeral Home directing.
Gladys was born in Mercersburg, Pa., and grew up in northern Iowa. After high school, she attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, where she met and married Clarence Bennett. From 1942 until 1979, the Rev. and Mrs. Bennett served Alabama Baptist Churches in Baldwin County, Irondale, Hartford, Andalusia, Lincoln and Wilsonville. After her children completed college, Gladys returned to college and graduated from Jacksonville State University in 1974. She taught for more than 15 years in Andalusia and Talladega County elementary schools. After retiring, the Rev. and Mrs. Bennett lived in the Eureka Community on Lake Logan Martin for 20 years. They moved to Atlanta in 1998. Gladys had a lifelong love of cooking, gardening and travel.
Gladys is survived by three daughters, Judith Ann Donaldson of Marietta, Ga. and Kinston, Ala., Karen Bennett of Ancram, N.Y., and Nancy Bennett of Arlington, Va.; two sons-in-law, Harvey Donaldson and Fred Jones; four grandchildren, Heather O’Donnell of Doylestown, Pa., Maury Donaldson of Basel, Switzerland, Dr. Kate Bennett Komis of Arlington, Va., and Clare Jones Rosenberger of Alexandria, Va.; five great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Richard, Don, Jim and Larry Ott, all of whom residein Iowa.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Clarence; a son-in-law, Paul Dominguez; her parents, Roy and Easter Ott; brothers, Homer, Malcolm and Harold and sisters, Eunice, Grace, Mary, Evelyn, Lois and Ila.
