Opp Mayor H.D. Edgar told the Opp City Council on Monday night that he has learned it wouldn’t be legal to allow residents to use four-wheelers and golf carts on city streets.

“What we’ve found out is that it is for private plantations or gated communities only,” Edgar said. “We cannot make it legal on state and city streets.”

At an April meeting, councilman Mick-ey Crew said he had received multiple reports of children and adults riding within the city limits and had some near-misses (accidents).

On Monday night, Councilman Oren Stewart said he’d received several complaints of people continuing to ride golf carts on the city’s streets.

Edgar reminded residents that it is against the law for them to ride on the public streets.

In other business, the council approved a class II package lounge liquor license for M and N Liquors LLC, which will be locate in the old ABC store.

Jason McCord and Caleb Norris will operate the store.

No residents spoke against the store, but the license application shows that McCord was arrested in October 2010 for driving under the influence by OPD.

“I feel like they’ll be successful,” Edgar said. “It will bring in some more tax revenue for us.”

“We really can’t turn down anyone, they have the right to operate a business,” councilman Jimmy Rogers said in the workshop. “We can’t turn them down, just because we don’t like it.”
