Just who can cook up the best barbecue in the county?
That’s what Opp’s Downtown Revitalization Association hopes to find out at its second annual barbecue cookoff, which will be held July 16 and 17 in downtown Opp.
Scotty Short, DRA member and Opp councilman said those interested in having a cookoff team should sign up as soon as possible, because there will be a 20-team capacity.
“We want people to get involved and get a team,” he said. “The cost is $100 per team.”
Short said those who participate will setup on Friday and cook all night.
“Judging will be at 11 a.m., Saturday,” he said. “We want to get everybody involved and bring as many people to Opp as we can.”
Short said the goal is to bring people to Opp.
Short said a new thing this year is that gas grills will be allowed.
“Last year we didn’t allow gas, but we had a lot of inquiries about it, so we decided to allow it,” he said.
In addition, Short said there will be “a lot of meat for sale,” and encourages those in the cook off to bring enough to sell as well.
