A bevy of ball players, set to arrive in June and July, is expected to generate enough an estimated $25,000 lodging tax revenue and allow the county to help host its second Babe Ruth World Series event in 2013.

Eddie Stacey, a member of the Co-vington County Rec Board, asked the commission Monday to designate two months of lodging tax receipts to specifically help fund the 2013 16-18 year-old Babe Ruth World Series. Lodging tax collections are designated to fund recreation throughout the county.

Stacey said at least two baseball tournaments will be held in Andalusia beginning next month, and another two state tournaments in July.

“These are great opportunities for us,” Stacey said. “We thought that it would only be fair to use that money to create another opportunity since (ball players) would be filling the hotels for those two months.

“The lodging tax is designated to go to recreation, and we thought this was a fitting way to use that money,” he said.

And commissioners agreed.

As for the World Series play, Stacey said nine teams from across the nation will arrive in Andalusia next summer to compete for the of 16 to 18-year-old champions. Cost to host the event is estimated at $45,000, and there are plans to ask the City of Andalusia to assist with funding, he said.

“This is a big achievement,” Stacey said. “This is going to bring a lot of people to Covington County. (The series) is the big time. These are big boys. You’ll see a lot a good baseball. There will be talent scouts and college recruiters, plus players and their families.”

In other business, the commission:

• declared July 6-8 as severe weather preparedness tax holiday.

• voted to sell a one-year-old Mack truck, which will garner a minimum price of $90,000, and replace it with a newer model. County Engineer Darren Capps said it will eliminate paying a $23,900 loan payment on the piece of equipment.

• declared a 2000 Ford Mustang, used by the Drug Task Force, as surplus, and agreed to sell it on govdeals.com.
