GENEVA — Luverne didn’t want what happened Thursday night again, and the Lady Tigers got their wish as they beat Opp 3-1 in the loser’s bracket championship game at the Class 3A, Area 2 tournament in Geneva.

Geneva beat Opp 5-1 in the first game of the day in the winner’s bracket.

The Lady Tigers and OHS were tied 1-1 all the way until the sixth inning, but LHS pitcher Tori Free hit a two-run double and her team played behind her in the top of the seventh to help get the win.

Geneva won 5-1 in the first game over Opp in the winner’s bracket. The Lady Panthers scored two runs in the third and added one run in the fourth and two runs in the sixth inning in the win.

“We got beat by a real good team,” OHS coach Jimmy Reeves said about Luverne. “I’m not sure that they are better than us, but they were (Friday).”

In addition to driving in the game-winning runs for the Lady Tigers, Free earned the win on the mound for LHS. She pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out eight batters.

“My girls, I couldn’t be more proud of them,” Reeves said. “I thought they got after them the whole game. It just wasn’t our day.”

Opp got on the board in the first inning off of an RBI double from Beth Anne Spurlin that scored Courtney Chatham.

Chatham led OHS and went 2-for-3. Spurlin, Erica Ladson and Anna Harrelson had one hit each.

Chatham got the loss, allowing two runs on four hits.

Geneva 5, Opp 1

Geneva’s Rita Pena struck out 10 batters and allowed one run on seven hits and two walks to lead the Lady Panthers.

GHS took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, and added one run in the fourth and two runs in the sixth to go ahead 5-1.

Opp had bases loaded in the sixth inning with no outs, but Ladson hit into an infield fly, and the runner going from second to third was tagged out to get the second out of the inning. The Lady Bobcats had runners on first and third, but hit into a ground out at third to end the inning.

“We had runners on the whole game, but we couldn’t get the big hit — the big break,” Reeves said.

Pena hit a two-run single to score Ashli Threat and Kailey Ausley in the sixth inning; Ausley hit an RBI double to score Threat in the fourth inning; Amanda Daher scored on a wild pitch and Threat scored on an error in the third inning.

Ausley, Pena, Threat and Kasey Carswell had two hits each for the Lady Panthers.

Ladson went 2-for-3 to lead Opp.

Reeves said he was especially proud of his two graduating seniors — Kourtnee Bradley and Spurlin.

Bradley pitched in both games, while Spurlin played first base.

“Both of these teams are older than we are, and you could tell that,” Reeves said. “It was just a tough day, but a great year.”

Opp ended its season with a 29-15 record.
