There may soon be a name change in the works for the former Florala City Middle School building.

City council members held a brief discussion about renaming the facility since it no longer serves as a school. Students vacated the building in 2010 and are now split between W.S. Harlan Elementary and Florala High schools.

Since its closure, the gym portion of the building been utilized. A few of the classrooms have been used for civic meetings, and just this month, Sav-A-Life opened a branch office in one of the larger classrooms.

“What I’d love to see is a business sponsor the building,” said Mayor Robert Williamson.

No new names were proposed, and the discussion was tabled so that council members could bring suggestions to the next meeting.

In other business, the council:

• approved a beer and wine license for Harry Grocery LLC, which will occupy the old GoCo location on U.S. Hwy. 331.

• voted to apply for a $2,500 Choctawhatchee, Pea and Yellow River Management Authority grant to put herbicide for hydrilla in Lake Jackson.
