The doors will open to the Hughes Mansion Saturday for one of the most highly anticipated estate sales in the county’s history.

Alan Cotton, whose auction house is handling the sale, said attendees will be amazed at the not only the diversity of the items for sale, but also the quantity.

“When you walk into the house, you’ll be greeted by a baby grand piano in the first parlor, then another parlor filled with oriental items and figures,” Cotton said. “From there, it’s room after room with everything from vintage clothes and toys to contemporary Jazz posters.”

Cotton said both floors of the Florala home will be open and filled to the brim with items for sale. The home, which was the estate of one of Florala’s founding families, was recently sold to the city’s newest doctor, Dr. Peter Litchfield.

It’s taken months to catalogue and organize the items inside the home.

“This is not a traditional country home estate sale,” Cotton said. “This is a grand estate sale. I was here a couple of nights by myself, and the home gave off such a homey, welcoming feeling.

“And when you think about the family who lived here – two of the sisters were accomplished musicians, and we have tables filled with sheet music and music books – and all the grand times here, like the parties, where someone can now own the crystal and silver that was used – it’s amazing to think about,” he said.

Cotton said the home’s front porch will be covered with furniture items, while in the dining room, one can find a long table full of stemware and various crystal items, as well as serving trays and such.

“In the kitchen, you’ll find all the traditional items – pots, pans and the like,” he said. “But throughout the house, it’s just a wonderland. One room has vintage pottery, vases and glassware. We’ve got a table full of magazines like Good House Keeping, Post, Life and Cosmopolitan, some dating back to 1918 with really beautiful covers. To me, that’s the best thing in the house, I think.

“We’ve also got another with vintage newspapers marking important dates in history like the invasion of Europe,” he said.

Gates open  at 8 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. It will reopen Sunday from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Cash and check will be accepted, he said.
