Opp girls defeat Luverne

Opp trailed the majority of its game against Luverne on Thursday night, but adjustments were made in the second half and the Lady Bobcats beat the Lady Tigers 57-44 in the semifinals of the Class 3A, Area 2 tournament at Geneva.

With this win, the Lady Bobcats earned a berth to play in the Class 3A sub regional next week.

OHS will face Geneva at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the area championship.

“I told the girls before the game we had three keys that we needed to do,” OHS coach Allison Gregory said. “We only accomplished one of them in the first half.

“We came out and made some adjustments and did a better job,” she said. “Defensively, we played well.”

Opp trailed 27-26 at half time and at the end of the third period, the Lady Bobcats led 38-36.

Nisha Stoudemire led the Lady Bobcats with 16 points. Savannah Gerber chipped in 13 points, and Asia Edwards had 10 points.

Torie Free had 20 points for Luverne, and Nykeia Person had 14.

The Lady Bobcats entered Thursday night’s game after losing two straight.

Gregory said she was “proud” of her girls for coming and getting a crucial win.

“Sometimes you get down like that and hang your head,” she said. “They found a way to win and they did.”
