A significant state road paving grant should translate into smoothing driver conditions for county residents near Opp in the near future.

On Monday, House Speaker Seth Hammett and State Senator Jimmy Holley announced that the Covington County Commission will receive a $250,000 grant to pave McDaniel Road, which is located approximately five miles north of Opp.

Funding for the project will come from the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) Public Road and Bridge Fund, pursuant to priorities established by the Covington County Commission

"The county commission asked for my assistance in securing funding specifically for McDaniel Road," said Hammett. "I am happy to assist them in completing projects they have identified as priorities."

Holley said he is happy to assist due mainly to safety reasons.

"A dirt road is better than no road at all, but a paved road is by far safer than a dirt road," said Holley.

Assistant County Engineer Lynn Ralls said the base, grade, drain and paving project will also include traffic striping and extensive erosion control measures.

The project totals 5,500 feet and the completed road will be widened to 80 feet, or 40 feet on either side of the center line.

"McDaniel Road presents a challenge because it is winding and hilly and will require additional rip rap," said Ralls. "The initial survey work has been done. We just need to acquire the rights-of-way from adjacent property owners."

Covington County Commission Chairman Greg White said he is certainly appreciative for the assistance on the McDaniel Road endeavor.

"We certainly appreciate the support of the governor and the speaker for making this project," said White.
