COLUMN: ‘News from Our Boys in the Armed Forces’ – January 11, 1945

John R. Glenn, Jr., SN1, U.S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Glenn, Sr., of 320 Stewart St., Andalusia, has returned to the Armed Guard Center in New Orleans, La., after seven months at sea as a member of the Navy Gun Crew aboard a supply-laden merchant ship. SN1 Glenn enlisted in the Navy in October 1942 and received his recruit training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Il. He has credit for 20 months sea duty afloat. He has visited several ports in England and France.

Palmer D. Bryan, Tech. Sgt., U.S., Army Air Corps, son of Mrs. F.A. Bryan, 405 College St., Andalusia, has arrived at the Army Air Forces Redistribution Station No. 2 in Miami Beach, Fl., after his deployment overseas. After medical examination and classification interviews, along with about two weeks of rest and recreation, he will receive his new assignment. Bryan flew 31 missions as a B-24 radio operator and gunner during 10 months in the European Theater. He has received the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross [DFC]. Bryan worked as a cabinet maker in Enterprise, Al. before joining the AAF in October 1942. His wife, Mrs. Lois Bryan, lives at 5338 Winthrop Ave., Chicago, Il.

Herbert King, 1st Lt., U.S. Army Air Corps, son of Mr. Edgar L. King, husband of Mrs. Ruth King of 209 Sixth Ave., Andalusia, has arrived at the Army Air Forces Redistribution Center Station 2 in Miami Beach, Fl. He will be reassigned after two weeks there. Lt. King has flown 68 missions as a P-40 fighter pilot during the last 12 months in the CBI [China, Burma, India] theater. He was credited with the destruction of one enemy plane and probably another. He was awarded the DFC [Distinguished Flying Cross] and the Air Medal. Before joining the Army Air Corps in Oct. 1942, King attended the Alabama Polytechnic Institute [Auburn] from 1938-41 and worked as assistant engineer for the Alabama Water Service Co.

Clifton Biggs, PFC, U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps, has returned home after serving three years as a switchboard operator with the Coast Artillery Corps in the Central Pacific theater. He is visiting Mr. H.J. Biggs.

Wyland Cauley, PFC, U.S. Army, has returned home after serving with the infantry in the American Theater. He is visiting with his mother and his wife. He has been awarded the American Theater ribbon and the Good Conduct medal.

Joe Pitts, SN2, U.S. Navy, son of Mrs. J.H. Pitts of Andalusia, has been sent from Bainbridge, Md. to Norfolk, Va. where he is attending Guard School. After four weeks of training, he expects to be sent to sea. Joe has four brothers who are also serving: PVT Selma Pitts, who is serving somewhere in Europe with Patton’s army; PVT Cleo Pitts, serving in Italy; PVT Grover Pitts, serving in New York and CPL Clevie Pitts, serving in Hawaii.

Albert Ables, PVT, U.S. Army, of Gantt, Al., was home on furlough recently visiting friends. He is stationed with the infantry in Texas.

Gaston Odom, PVT, U.S. Army, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Lee Odom, and husband of Mrs. Annie Merle [Williams] Odom of Rt. 2, Dozier, recently spent a 15-day furlough with his wife and baby, Wilson Ray Odom. PVT Odom is currently stationed at Ft. Sill, Ok., but is due to be reassigned when he returns. He has two brothers in the service, Johnnie Odom, Army, and Columbus Odom, Navy.

Walter Hogg, SGT, U, S. Army, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lessie Aughtman of Rt. 2, Dozier, is home on a 21-day furlough after serving overseas for eight months. He has served in Burma and China where he was wounded in the leg and foot in June 1944.He is now stationed at Finney General Hospital at Thomasville, Ga. SGT Hogg was mighty glad to be home after seven months of intensive going in the Pacific area. His friends will be glad to know that his condition is improving and he thanks his many friends for the great times he was shown while back home. He returns back to camp the twelfth.

Emmett R. Ballard, PVT, U.S. Army, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Ballard of Rt. 1, Pigeon Creek, is now in a general hospital somewhere in England. He has been in action in France but developed a case of trench foot which put him in a hospital in England. PVT Ballard trained at Ft. McClellan, Al., and underwent paratrooper training at Ft. Benning, Ga. He has a cousin, SGT. Raymond. L. Ballard, U.S. Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force, who is also in England. They hope to get together soon.

Marjorie S. Thomas, 1st Lt., U.S. Army, daughter of Mrs. Euie Sellers of McKenzie, is stationed at the Oliver General Hospital, Augusta, Ga. 1st Lt. Thomas is a nurse at the hospital where most of her patients are men who have seen action on the front lines. She graduated from Nursing School at Independence Sanitarium in 1939. The Surgeon General of the Army has issued a call for 10,000 more nurses to fill the needs this year. Not only are graduate nurses needed but so are Army nurse aides who are employed under the U.S. Civil Service.

Joseph Reaford Daughtry, SA, U.S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Daughtry, Rt. 6, Andalusia, is reporting back to the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Il. Reaford, as he is better known by his friends, has completed the 10-week Navy boot camp and is awaiting assignment at sea.

Frank Grimmett, PFC, U.S. Army, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Grimmett of Andalusia, spent the holidays with his parents and has returned to his assignment at Tampa, Fl.
