Four county players receive All-State Football honors for 2024

Four Covington County players were selected to the 2024 Alabama Sports Writers Association’s All-State High School Football Team that was announced on Saturday, Dec. 21.

The All-State Team features first and second teams and honorable mention players in each of the AHSAA’s 1A-7A classifications and the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA).

Nominations were made from coaches statewide to their respective sports writers and were voted on by the ASWA’s prep committee. Players must be nominated by their coaches to be considered.

Andalusia was represented by junior defensive back Neillex Ferrell on the Class 5A Second Team Defense. Ferrell played in 11 games this season and finished with 64 solo tackles, 30 assisted tackles, five tackles for loss, one interception, one fumble recovered, one forced fumble, four quarterback hurries, and five pass breakups.

The Bulldogs finished the season with a 7-5 record and made a second-round playoff appearance under veteran head coach Trent Taylor.

Florala was represented by three of its seniors: wide receiver Elijah McMeans on the Class 1A First Team Offense, defensive back Rayshon Coleman on the Second Team Defense, and linebacker Bradley Norman as Honorable Mention.

McMeans played in all 11 games and finished with 52 receptions for 1,017 yards and 11 touchdowns. He averaged 19.6 yards per reception and 92.5 per game with his longest reception of the year for 79 yards.

Coleman played in all 11 games and finished with 60 solo tackles, 79 assisted tackles, 45 tackles for loss, one interception, two fumbles recovered, two forced fumbles, and four pass breakups.

Norman played in all 11 games and finished with 59 solo tackles, 94 assisted tackles, 37 tackles for loss, two fumbles recovered, and one forced fumble.

The Wildcats finished the season with a 7-4 record and made a first-round playoff appearance under first-year head coach Kyle Davis.
