COLUMN: ‘News of Our Boys [and girls] in the Armed Forces’ – November 23, 1944

PFC Cecil Owens, U.S. Army, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.O. Owens, Rt. 6, Andalusia, is convalescing at the Army’s Oliver General Hospital in Augusta, Ga. The hospital is one of 63 great medical institutions located throughout the United States that treat our wounded soldiers returning from overseas. PFC Owens has been in the service for two years, serving in the South West Pacific theater. He is recovering from wounds he received in combat. The Owens family also have two other sons serving in the Army, Corporal Louie Owens and PFC Grady D. Owens.

Carlos Obie Beasley, 2nd Lt., U.S. Army Air Corps has received the silver wings of a pilot and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Beasley, South Cotton St. in Andalusia. 2nd Lt. Beasley graduated from the Advanced Single Engine School, Army Air Force Pilot School, Spence Field, Moultrie, Ga. In civilian life, he was a dairyman.

Tech. Sgt. Willie P. Mahone, U.S. Army Air Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.R. Mahone, 211 Barton St., Andalusia, has arrived at the Army Air Forces Redistribution Center, Station 2, at Miami Beach, Fl. Sgt. Mahone was a mechanic in the CBI [China, Burma, India] theater. He is awaiting a new assignment while he undergoes rest and relaxation. He is the husband of Mrs. Irene McGehee Mahone, 6 Cassidy St., Mobile, Al.

Sgt. Herbert U. McLelland, U.S. Army Air Corps, is stationed at the Air Services Command Depot in Ireland. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L.H. McLelland, Rt. 4, Andalusia. Sgt. McLelland is a member of the mess hall staff at the Air Service Command Depot, which is planning a Turkey Day dinner to compete with Mom’s. Thousands of pounds of gobblers, dressing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, celery, pie and coffee are on the way from the U.S. Sgt. McLelland and his buddies will celebrate with a wing, a drumstick and a Thanksgiving prayer. He says, “These soldier-mechanics and technicians have really done a job keeping the fighters and bombers in the air over Germany. We’ll try to give them the best Thanksgiving they ever had in the Army.”

Before entering the Army Air Force in Jan. 1944, Sgt. McLelland was in the café business. He attended Red Level High School and has a brother, Tech. Sgt. Morgan McLelland, in the service.

Tech 4 John D. Dickens, U.S. Army, is now convalescing at the Army’s Oliver general Hospital at Augusta, Ga. He has been in the service for five years, four months, serving in the Ordnance in Europe.

Captain Eloise M. Brown, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, daughter of Mrs. Madeline Brown of Andalusia, is now the senior woman officer at the Marine Aviation Detachment, Naval Air Technical Training Center, Norman, Ok. Capt. Brown graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1940. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority at UNC and worked for E. I. Dupont de Nemours and Company at Martinsville, Va. before joining the service.
