An Opp resident was arrested following an armed standoff Saturday morning in Opp.
Cody J. Carnley, 22, was charged with first degree attempted assault and unlawful imprisonment following incident.
According to officials with the Opp Police Department, police received a call at 8:17 a.m. reporting that a male subject had fired a weapon outside of a residence on Hattaway Road. Upon arrival, police observed Carnley at the front of the residence, near the front door, armed with a weapon and warning officers not to approach.
Early in the investigation, police said they learned that Carnley had fired a weapon at a family member’s vehicle as they drove past the residence, prior to police arriving on the scene.
At the scene, officers said that at one point Carnley was observed holding a small child, escalating the urgency of the situation.
After a two-hour standoff, officers took the suspect into custody without injury to anyone involved. Following Carnley’s arrest, he was transported to Mizell Memorial Hospital for mental evaluation.
Carnley was booked into the Covington County jail with combined bond for each charge set at $115,000.
The Opp Police Department expressed its gratitude to the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, Covington County Incident Response Team, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency — including members of the Highway Patrol, State Bureau of Investigation and the Swat Team — for assisting with the incident.
