No charges have been filed in a Monday evening wreck in which a Toyota Prius ended up on the Covington County Courthouse lawn.
Capt. Paul Dean of the Andalusia Police Department said an officer who was on his way to work Monday observed the driver of the Prius, later identified as Sebastian Montano, 21, of Crestview, going the wrong way around the Court Square.
The officer got behind the vehicle and turned his lights on. The driver went down Cotton Street, did loops in at least two yards at Cotton and Watson, and headed back toward the Square. Eyewitnesses, whose statements were confirmed by video surveillance, said he made at least two loops around the Square while driving in the wrong direction.
The officer turned his lights and siren off, as he knew the driver was likely headed toward pedestrians on the Square. Montano’s vehicle hit the curb, taking out a light and garbage can, and went airborne onto the raised lawn, where it came to rest. The impact also damaged the retaining wall at the courthouse.
Montano was airlifted to a Gulf Coast trauma center. City of Andalusia crews used a lull to lift the vehicle from the lawn onto the street so that it could be loaded onto a wrecker.
Capt. Dean said the investigation into the accident continues.
A Go Fund Me page, set up by Montano’s family, states he has been dealing with mental health issues. The page can be found at https://www.gofundme.com/f/kp2ga-help-sebastian-rebuild-after-accident?qid=ecfeefe2b409105fc83bc896bcd1fb72.
