The Covington County Commission has recently noticed a concerning rise in the theft of road signs throughout the county, with over 48 signs reported missing in the past month, particularly in areas north of Highway 84. Road sign theft is not just a nuisance—it is a criminal offense. If the person or persons responsible are identified, they will face criminal charges.

Road signs play a critical role in the safety and welfare of our community. They are essential for guiding emergency services to addresses during crises, ensuring timely assistance when it matters most. Removing or damaging these signs compromises public safety and hinders emergency response efforts.

Replacing a single road sign, including labor, costs taxpayers approximately $75. This ongoing theft is not only a safety issue but also places an unnecessary financial burden on the county and its residents.

The Covington County Commission urges anyone with information about these thefts to contact the Covington County Road Department at 334-428-2622. If you witness someone in the act of stealing a road sign, please call 911 immediately.
