Community invited to join in recognizing 18 veterans

The Honor Flight of Covington County, Alabama, will host a “Welcome Home” celebration for 18 veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The event is part of the Honor Flight program, which serves veterans from South Alabama and Northwest Florida, giving them the recognition they deserve for their service.

Organizers are calling on the public to take part in either the send-off or the welcome home — or both. The only request is for individuals, whether in uniform or not, to show up at Pensacola International Airport to greet the veterans. Supporters are encouraged to bring signs, flags, balloons, noise makers or simply their presence, which will be most appreciated by those returning from the trip.

The Honor Flight Network, a national nonprofit, arranges trips for veterans to visit war memorials in Washington, D.C., offering them an opportunity to remember fallen comrades, share their stories and reflect with fellow veterans. Thanks to generous donations, all honored veterans travel free of charge.

Though the organization originally focused on World War II veterans, the Honor Flight mission has since expanded to include veterans from the Korean War, Vietnam War and even those who are critically ill, through their TLC program. Veterans are only eligible for one Honor Flight trip to ensure the program can reach as many service members as possible.
