A Covington County student angler is combining his passion for fishing with helping those in need by organizing an upcoming Cast for Kids event.

Brayden Tisdale, a 10th grade student  is organizing the special event to be held Saturday, Oct. 19, at Opp’s Frank Jackson State Park.

Cast for Kids is an organization that provides special needs children the opportunity to experience a day of fishing. Cast for Kids events are held across the country, encouraging the kids to develop their skills along with their parents. It is also designed to spread the positive message that any kid can do anything they want to do despite disabilities.

Tisdale has inherited a passion for teaching others about fishing and outdoors. He first got involved with helping children with disabilities as a volunteer with the Miracle League of Andalusia, which provides kids an opportunity to learn and play baseball.

After participating in that event, Dothan Leisure had a day of fishing in Dothan for kids, where high school anglers helped teach the kids how to bait hooks, cast and catch fish. The passion grew from those events to where Brayden was put in contact with Cast for Kids, which led to the first-ever Cast for Kids event in Opp.

“I’m super excited to bring something like this close to home,” Tisdale said. “I have been very blessed to travel and fish in different states and I have learned a lot from people above myself in the fishing industry, so to give back to these kids and have a part of seeing them happy, is really exciting.”

Each participant in Cast for Kids will receive their own rod and reel combo, tackle box, trophy, and lunch for the day.

Tisdale said he worked with Bass Pro Shops and Missile Baits for a few extra prizes for thee participants. The Cast for Kids event is not just for Alabama participants. It is open to ages four and up to adults. The event is free and anyone who would like to volunteer or signup as a participant can do so by visiting castforkids.org.
