A long-time home in the Carolina community was destroyed in a 2023 fire and those who once lived there now seek help in deciding how to approach cleaning up what remains.

In March 9, 2023, at about 6 to 7 p.m., Adeline Logiotatos realized her house was on fire and immediately began searching for her granddaughter, Lilly Kervin, who lives with her.

“I refused to come out because she wouldn’t answer me. I thought she was still in the house. Something, I believe the good Lord above, told me to go back to the kitchen. As I was going there I saw her through a door standing in the back yard, so I came out then,” Logiotatos said.

It was determined a grease fire in the kitchen was the cause and it only took a few minutes for the home to be fully involved. A vehicle parked in the adjacent car port was also lost.

The Carolina Volunteer Fire Department responded to extinguish the blaze, but when the smoke cleared all that was salvaged was a few knick-knacks and some family Bibles.

The home that sits along Rockhole Bridge Rd. was in Logiotatos’s family for two generations. It was her uncle’s home before her mother moved in, which led to Logiotatos taking ownership and living there since the 1990s.

Over the past year, Logiotatos and her granddaughter have lived with family members as she works to rebuild her life. Among her priorities is cleaning the property that once was her home. Today, all that remains is the foundation and few brick walls. She is not sure how to go about getting it cleaned up, not just for herself, but for her neighbors in the Carolina community.

“I have not found anyone who does this kind of work. Nobody seems to know who can help us with it,” she said.

Logiotatos is hopeful that someone can point her in the right direction. In the meantime, a family friend has helped keep the lot mowed. Anyone with information or suggestions can reach Logiotatos at 334-343-3353.
