Malcolm Donaldson, Hospital Apprentice, U.S. Navy, 206 Barton St., Andalusia, and Willie C. Wilder, Hospital Apprentice, U.S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Wilder, Rt. 5, Andalusia. were recently promoted to Hospital Apprentice Second Class. They graduated from a six-week course of training at the Navy Hospital Corps School at Great Lakes Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Illinois. The men will continue their training at other Naval hospitals before being assigned to ships at sea or other shore facilities.

Another class of Aviation Cadets has arrived for their second phase of instruction at Garden City Army Airfield, Kansas. Among the class is Aviation Cadet Fred J. Saunders, U.S. Army Air Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyndon Saunders, 201 Opp Ave., Andalusia. Cadet Saunders is a 1941 graduate of Andalusia High School and is married to the former Miss Flora Genell Chambers of Florala. Saunders has completed 60 hours of primary training at Chichasha, Oklahoma, and will undergo 10 weeks of intensive academic and aerial training at Garden City. From there he will continue advanced training on single or twin-engine aircraft before receiving his silver wings as a flight officer.

Lt. William A. Smily of Fort Devane, Massachusetts, is spending the weekend with his parents on Baisden St. in Andalusia. His brother, SGT Glenn Smily, is also home before reporting to his new assignment in Arkansas.

PVT Annie Ruth Beasley, U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve, has been promoted to Corporal. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Beasley of Andalusia. Corporal Beasley has been assigned to duty as a weather observer after completing training at Naval Air Station, Lakehurst, N.J. The Aerographer’s School at Lakehurst trains sailors, Marines, WAVES and women Marine reserves as naval weather observers. The women completing the school are sent to shore bases where they relieve men for sea duty or overseas duty.

Mrs. Addie B. Ammons of Rt. 2, Andalusia, has received a message from her son, PVT Bunnie J. Ammons, U.S. Army, that he is in a German Prisoner of War Camp and is being treated well. He had previously been reported missing in action in Italy.

Aviation Cadet Charles E. Brawner, U.S. Army Air Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Brawner, 312 Church St., Andalusia, is scheduled to receive his silver pilot’s wings and officer’s bars, soon at the twin-engine advanced flying school at Pampa Army Air Field, Texas. Cadet Brawner is an alumnus of Andalusia High School and Draughon’s Business College. He was accepted for flight training in October 1943. He received primary flight training at Coleman, Texas, and basic flight training at Sherman, Texas.

PVT John T. Bass, U.S. Army Air Corps, recently spent his furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Bass, of the Pleasant Home community. He is currently stationed at Kearns Army Air Field, Utah.
