Florala (3-1, 1-1 1A Region 2) will hit the road for the first time this season and travel to McKenzie (3-1, 1-1) in a pivotal region contest for both schools on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m.
This matchup will be the 30th between the teams dating back to 1941. The Wildcats lead the all-time series against the Tigers 15-13-1. The school recently announced the game was moved from Friday due to an official shortage.
“McKenzie is going to be another tough, formidable opponent. They are 1-1 in the region as we are and were defeated by Georgiana as we were. The difference is that they beat Elba and looked good doing it,” Head Coach Kyle Davis said. “They have a high-powered offense that looks to outscore their opponents every Friday night. They also have a great group on the defensive side of the ball as well. Coach (Brian) Bradford is an outstanding coach who gets everything out of his guys. I believe we are up to the task of McKenzie, but it will take a well-executed game from us.”
Last week, Florala celebrated homecoming with a 48-0 win over Pleasant Home. McKenzie was also at home but suffered a 48-24 loss to Georgiana.
Davis said he felt his team had a good rebound from their loss to Georgiana.
“Our kids focused on getting back on track, and we were able to execute like we needed to. When you have a loss in the previous week, it is good to see your team bounce back and do the things you coached them to do when that was a struggle in the previous week. I was really proud of our guys against PHS. They knew the task at hand and set out to complete the task. There are no perfectly played games, but our execution defensively and on offense made it hard for PHS to get anything going on either side,” he said.
The Wildcats edged the Tigers, 36-34, on the road last season.
