A McKenzie man is charged with attempting to elude, reckless endangerment, and driving under the influence after he crashed his vehicle on Prestwood Bridge Road while attempting to elude an Andalusia Police Department officer.
Chief Paul Hudson said officers attempted to stop Wyatt V. Sexton, 31, of McKenzie, for a traffic violation while he was traveling on Snowden Drive.
When the officer turned the blue lights on, the driver “took off,” and turned off the bypass onto Prestwood Bridge Road. The driver left the road and his vehicle struck a tree in the 1700-1800 area of Prestwood Bridge Road.
Sexton was taken to Andalusia Health, where it was determined his injuries were minor. He was charged, and is being held in the Covington County Jail on a $30,500 bond.
Previously, Sexton was convicted of manslaughter for the 2013 death of Linda Knight of Georgiana. In that incident, Sexton struck Knight’s vehicle that was disabled after hitting deer on Hwy. 55. At that trial, witnesses testified that Sexton had been drinking earlier in the evening and those at the scene of the accident said he approaced the crash scene at a high rate of speed, ultimately hitting Knight’s vehicle head-on. Knight was still in the driver’s seat at the time of impact, and as a result of the impact, was ejected and died on the scene.
Following Sexton’s 2016 conviction, he was sentenced to 10 years, but was granted a split sentence and served one year.
