Andalusia increases proficiency in ELA, Math and Science
Local school systems saw improvements in many areas of standardized test scores, based on results released by the Alabama Department of Education.
The scores are taken from standardized tests taken during the 2023-24 school year, including the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP), the ACT test, and other alternative assessments.
Andalusia City Schools saw gains across all three subjects, English/Language Arts (ELA), Math, and Science.
In ELA, the percentage of Andalusia students the reached proficiency among all the tests went from 55.3 percent in 2023 to 59.7 percent in 2024.
In Math, the percentage rose from 47 percent in 2023 to 50.5 percent in 2024.
Those testing proficient in Science increased from 48.8 percent in 2023 to 55.1 in 2024.
Students in the Opp City School System saw a gain in ELA, testing at 58.2 percent proficiency in 2024 as compared to 55.6 percent in 2023. Opp students dropped in Math and Science. In Math, Opp dropped from 40.7 percent in 2023 to 35.8 in 2024 and in Science those testing proficient fell from 43.1 in 2023 to 37.3 percent in 2024.
Those tested within the Covington County School System saw increases in all three subjects. In ELA, those students tested at 58.4 percent proficient in 2024, up from 2023’s 54.4 percent. In Math, the students increased proficiency from 34.2 percent in 2023 to 36 percent in 2024. Science proficiency also increased, from 43.3 percent in 2023 to 44.4 percent in 2024.
Statewide, scores are up in all three subjects: ELA is up from 49.5 percent in 2023 to 52.8 percent in 2024; Math is up from 29.9 percent to 31.2 percent; and Science increased from 38.5 to 39 percent.
ACAP tests are given to students in math and English language arts in second through eighth, and in science for fourth, sixth and eighth grades. In high school, juniors take the ACT test.
