COLUMN: ‘News from Our Boys in the Armed Forces’ – June 29, 1944

SSGT. James F. Meredith, U.S. Army Air Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Meredith, Rt. 1, Dozier, AL., has just returned to West Palm Beach, FL., after a 15-day furlough visiting his parents. Meredith has been stationed there for two years as Chief Clerk of the Publications Department. He expects orders to a new base soon.

Corporal Darrel A. Lowry, U.S. Army Air Corps, husband of Mrs. Hazel L. Lowry, and son of Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Lowry, South Fifth St., Florala, Alabama, has recently been promoted to Sergeant. His promotion was announced by the Commanding General, AAF Eighth Fighter Command, “somewhere in England.”

Corporal George E. Anderson, U.S. Army Air Corps, was recently promoted to Sergeant by the Commanding General, AAF Eighth Fighter Command, “somewhere in England.” SGT. Anderson’s wife, Mrs. Frances L. Anderson, resides on Williams St., Andalusia. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Anderson, reside at Rt. 3, Andalusia. SGT. Anderson attended Straughn School and was an aircraft welder in the Civil Service before entering the Army on April 3, 1943.

Seaman Robert Brawner, U.S. Navy, is spending a well-earned leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Brawner. He has been in the Navy for three and a half years, and has sailed the seven seas including accompanying President Roosevelt to one of his Atlantic conferences with Prime Minister Churchill.

Lt. Gordon Bradley, U.S. Army, is spending a short furlough with his family at Gantt. Lt. Bradley, who is called “Sleepy” by his friends, joined the Army when the local National Guard unit was called up. He was a popular mail carrier for route six , Andalusia, in civilian life. He will be reporting to his new duty station at Ft. Bragg, N.C., after his leave.

PVT Donald Southwell, U.S. Army, arrived this week to spend a 10-day furlough with his wife and family here.
