In a collaborative effort between the Opp Police Department, the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Covington County Incident Response Team, a significant operation was executed on April 9, leading to the arrest of two individuals.

Law enforcement personnel executed a search warrant at a residence located in the 500 block of W. Covington Avenue at approximately 4:15 p.m. The warrant was obtained as part of an ongoing investigation into illegal weapon possession and narcotics activity at that location.

Just prior to the execution of the search warrant, a suspect identified as Phuquan James, got into the passenger side of vehicle and left the residence. A traffic stop was initiated, but the vehicle fled, which led to a vehicle pursuit. Fortunately for the pursuing law enforcement officers, the suspects circled back near the exact location where the search warrant was being executed.

Following the apprehension of the suspects, two individuals were taken into custody.

Phuquan James, 31, of Opp faces multiple charges including drug trafficking, possession of a controlled substance, tampering with evidence, resisting arrest, and firearms-related offenses.

Additionally, Jonathan Hines, 24, of Opp is charged with attempting to elude law enforcement, possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Subsequent searches of the suspects’ vehicle and the residence revealed a cache of illegal firearms and narcotics, according to law enforcement officials. Among the items seized were handguns, AR15 style rifles, a shotgun, and a significant quantity of a synthetic controlled substance.

“This operation is a testament to the effectiveness of collaboration between law enforcement agencies,” said Opp Police Chief Kevin Chance. “Our joint efforts have led to the removal of dangerous weapons and illicit substances from our streets, contributing to the safety and well-being of our community.”

Both suspects were taken to the Covington County Jail.
