Opp wins 11th straight with second area shutout of Straughn

As the first half of the season comes to a close the Opp Lady Bobcats and Straughn Lady Tigers met for the second time this year in a class 3A area 3 match up on Thursday.
In their first meeting Opp won 11-0 and got a run in the first inning to start the rematch. Reese Cauley singled in Amaya Womack for the first run of the game and a 1-0 Opp lead after one.
In the bottom of the second the Lady Bobcats scored five more runs. Jaidyn Ivey drove in the first run which was followed by Amaya Womack who drove in two more giving Opp a 4-0 lead. Another base hit by Reese Cauley scored the fourth run of the inning for a 5-0 Opp lead. An RBI by Addison Moseley wrapped up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with Opp leading 6-0.
Straughn got their first base runner of the game on an Opp error in the top of the fourth but could not score. Kyleigh Bennett of Straughn kept Opp off the board in the third and fourth inning as the game went to the fifth.
Straughn’s best chance to score came in the top of the fifth when McKena Bailey was hit by a pitch and Blakeley Smith got a single for the Lady Tigers first hit of the game. With runners in scoring position, Opp’s Bradleigh Lanier managed to record a strikeout and ended Straughn’s threat in the fifth.
As the game headed to the bottom half of the fifth inning Straughn surrendered two walks and hit an Opp batter to load the bases with no one out. With one swing of the bat Jaidyn Ivey cleared the bases for Opp putting them just one run away from ending the game. Amaya Womack hit a fly ball center field giving Ivey the chance to tag from third and score the game ending run.
The Lady Bobcats went to win the game 10-0 in five innings. The win was Opp’s 11th straight as they remain undefeated in area play. Straughn falls to 1-2 in area play.
For Opp Cauley was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles and two RBIs. Ivey and Womack were both 2-for-3 each with two singles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Lanier was the winning pitcher for Opp in the circle going all five innings allowing just one hit and striking out eight.
Smith was 1-for-2 for the Lady Tigers registering their only hit of the game. Bennett went the distance for Straughn in the circle striking out three.
Opp’s record now stands at 14-1 overall and 4-0 in class 3A area 3. Straughn sits at 6-3 on the season and is 1-2 in class 3A area 3.
Both teams head into spring break and do not take the field again until Tuesday, April 2. The Lady Bobcats will host the Brantley Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Tigers will remain in area play and host the Pike County Lady Bulldogs.
