Sheriff: Deputy has undergone surgery, is now recovering
A Covington County corrections deputy was hospitalized last week after being attacked by an inmate at the county jail.
According to Sheriff Blake Turman, inmate Donald Lamar Burgans attacked the deputy during the morning hours of Monday, March 11, causing what he described as “great injury.” The deputy, whose name will not been released, underwent surgery on March 12 and is recovering, according to Turman.
“(The deputy) has a long row to hoe but his spirits are up. Please keep him and his family in your prayers. We will release an update as soon as possible,” Turman said in a Facebook post.
Burgan was in the Covington County Jail after being charged with third degree escape while being arrested for failure to appear. Sheriff Turman said Burgan will now face the additional charge of first degree assault following the attack on the corrections deputy. Burgan’s total combined bond is set at $110,000.
