Red Level School senior Javen Poindexter recently competed in the Alabama vs. Florida All-Star Basketball Game at Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, Florida, on Sunday, March 10.
He finished the game with 25 points, 11 assists, and five rebounds. He was 5-for-7 from the floor including two three-pointers and went 9-of-10 at the free-throw line. Team Alabama fell short to Team Florida by a final score of 97-96.
“Words cannot express how grateful I am for this experience. It was a true honor to be chosen, and being able to represent my state meant everything to me. Not only did I have the opportunity to represent Alabama, but it also gave me the privilege of representing my family, friends, school, and community. I am grateful for the opportunity to meet new people and gain more valuable experience,” Poindexter said.
Despite the loss, Poindexter reflected on his performance and what he learned from participation in the game.
“Being a driven athlete requires not only dedication but also the ability to self-reflect on how I can constantly improve myself and my game. I learned to not listen to the outside noise. I learned that all I have to do is be myself, and no one can ever take that away from me. I got to play with and against some talented guys who are also working on themselves to take their game to the next level,” he said.
Ranked third in his graduating class, Poindexter was selected as the 2023-2024 RLS Student of the Year. He eclipsed 3,000 career points during the season, was the state’s top scorer with an average of 38 points per game, and earned a career-high 73 points on Jan. 30.
He will graduate from Red Level on Friday, May 24, at 7:30 p.m. and plans to hold a camp for local youth and older athletes in the near future.
“It meant a lot for my friends and family to come and support me. Without them, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing, and for that, I’m thankful and blessed I have them in my life,” Poindexter said.
Javen is the son of Jeffery and Leola Poindexter with a brother, KJ Lawrence, and a sister, Jayla Poindexter.
