In honor of Career and Technical Education Month and Black History Month, Andalusia High School’s chapter of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America held its annual FCCLA Week from Feb. 12-16.
FCCLA is the career and technical student organization for Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) formerly known as Home Economics. Jana Clark serves as the FACS teacher and sponsor of FCCLA at AHS.
“Every year, the FCCLA officers either use the National FCCLA theme for the week or create their own. The officers chose ‘The Power of Positivity’ as this year’s theme. This was not only the theme for FCCLA Week, but it has been the club’s theme for the entire school year. Whether it is being involved in a school club, sport, or activity or being involved in a volunteer effort outside of school, AHS FCCLA hopes everyone shares their positivity with the world and in turn makes it a better place,” Clark said.
The theme for Monday, Feb. 12, was “Positivity is the Path to Success.”
In honor of Black History Month and Career and Technical Education Month, FCCLA encouraged the students to look to inspirational leaders of both past and present such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Maya Angelou, Les Brown, and Michael Jordan, who used/uses their platform to spread positivity. Students found quotes from these leaders as well as others on the walls of the hallway. Others included the Dalai Lama, Lucille Ball, Willie Nelson, and Nick Saban. From the Civil Rights Movement, the NBA, and politics to acting, singing, and poetry, these leaders used or uses their platform to promote the power of positivity. PIP teachers passed out blow pops and stickers or tattoos to each student as a reminder to ‘Blow’ Up your Positivity in 2024.’ Students also received information on FCCLA’s “Happy Art” competition.
The theme for Tuesday, Feb. 13, was “Don’t Let Anyone Steal Your Positivity.”
FCCLA officers wore necklaces that the student body had the opportunity to “steal” if they failed to say “Power of Positivity” after everything they said. If a student “stole” the necklace, they had to continue the game and say “Power of Positivity” after everything they said. The students who had a necklace at the end of the day won a prize.
The theme for Wednesday, Feb. 14, was “Color Your World with Positivity.”
According to Bethanyworks.com, colors that represent positive energy are pink, yellow, and orange. Pink represents hope and love, yellow represents optimism and happiness, and orange represents energy and confidence. The students colored our world with positivity by wearing one of these colors on Wednesday. FCCLA officers also hid “hearts” throughout the school that had questions in them. If a student brought the “heart” to Clark with the correct answer, they won a prize. In addition, FCCLA members delivered Valentine’s cards and silk flowers to the nursing home residents at Andalusia Manor after school that afternoon.
The theme for Thursday, Feb. 15, was “Our Members = Our Positivity.”
FCCLA treated the FCCLA members by having “Muffins with Members” during PIP to show their appreciation for their dedicated members.
The theme for Friday, Feb. 16, was “Thank Those Who Have Impacted Your Positivity.”
Also known as Teacher Appreciation Day, teachers received a thank you note and a Valentine brownie from an FCCLA member in their school mailboxes. FCCLA also treated the AHS teachers with an appreciation breakfast on Friday, Feb. 23, and provided snack bags for the AJHS teachers.
