Five county football players named to ASWA All-State Team

Five Covington County players were selected to the 2023 Alabama Sports Writers Association’s All-State High School Football Team that was announced on Saturday, Dec. 23.
The All-State Team features first and second teams and honorable mention players in each of the AHSAA’s 1A-7A classifications as well as the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA).
Nominations were made from coaches statewide to their respective sports writers and were voted on by the ASWA’s prep committee. Players must be nominated by their coaches to be considered.
Andalusia had two of its seniors represented in Class 4A. Offensive lineman Kol Petrey was represented on the First Team Offense. Defensive lineman Landen Marshall was named to the First Team Defense. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 10-2 record and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs under veteran head coach Trent Taylor.
Florala also had two players represented in Class 1A. Junior quarterback Rayshon Coleman was named to the First Team Offense and among four players listed as an Athlete. Junior wide receiver Elijah McMeans was named to the Second Team Offense. The Wildcats went 7-4 on the season and made a first-round playoff appearance under head coach Jordan Cantrell.
Straughn had one player represented in Class 3A. Senior defensive back Parker Black was named to the First Team Defense. The Tigers were 10-2 on the season and won their first region title in 14 years this year under head coach Ashley Kilcrease.
