The Andalusia Bulldogs were kicking on all cylinders Friday night, cruising to a 63-19 victory over region opponent Montgomery Academy.
Along with a strong outing by the Andalusia offense, special teams also had a big night with two kickoff returns and a punt return. Meanwhile, the defense held the Eagles to only six points until midway through the third quarter.
Senior quarterback Jack Lathrop had a good night, going 7-of-12 for 185 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bulldog runningback corps was solid with four players going over 50 yards and three finding the endzone. Zerrick Jones had 57 yards on 8 carries for two touchdowns while Jordyn Skanes led the team with 97 yards on only three carries. Noah Curry added 62 yards on 10 rushes and scored while Pickle Calloway carried the ball eight times for 61 yards.
Tyler Sigers was the leading receiver with three catches for 96 yards and a touchdown while Kal Crittenden had two catches for 62 yards and a score. Jordan Stallworth and Calvin Daniels each had a reception for 14 and 10 yards, respectively.
Crittenden also shined on special teams with a punt return of 62 yards and a kickoff for 88 yards. Jones added another 80-yard kickoff return.
The Eagles took the first lead of the game, scoring on the third play of their first possession, hitting a 63-yard pass to go up 6-0 after missing the point-after.
That lead did not last long. Lathrop hit his target on the first pass of the game for a big gain of 42 yards courtesy of Sigers. Jones took it from there, scoring on a 16-yard run. Cobb Stewart’s point-after was good giving Andalusia a 7-6 lead.
A three-and-out by the Bulldog defense lead to a nice punt return from Crittenden to the MA 33. On third down, Lathrop targeted Crittenden who took the ball in for a 32-yard touchdown reception. The point-after missed, making the score 13-6.
Andalusia added to its lead early in the second period when Jones went up the middle for the score. Curry took the ball in on the 2-point conversion attempt to make the score 21-6.
After the defense forced another three-and-out, MA’s punt was downed all the way back at the 7-yard line. But, on the first play, Skanes broke through the line and sped away from the MA defense for a 93-yard touchdown. Stewart’s PAT lifted the Bulldogs to a 28-6 lead midway through the second.
Yet another three-and-out led to another Andalusia score when Crittenden took the punt all the way back 62 yards for another Andalusia touchdown.
Crittenden would score the next AHS touchdown, taking the second half opening kickoff 88 yards to make the score 42-6.
A quick three-and-out led to another nice return by Crittenden to the MA 46 and on the first play Lathrop connected with Sigers for the touchdown and a 49-6 lead after the PAT.
Montgomery Academy would get into the end zone twice in the third period, but Andalusia would go on to make the final two scores of the game, including an 80-yard kickoff return by Jones in the third and a 20-yard touchdown run by Curry late in the fourth.
The Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0) will host non-region opponent Bibb County (5-0) Friday, Sept. 29.
