All six teams in Covington County will take the field at the halfway point of September with two facing non-region opponents.
Andalusia at Bullock County
Andalusia (3-0, 1-0 4A Region 2) will hit the road to Union Springs for a region matchup against Bullock County (1-2, 0-1).
The Bulldogs have an 8-0 all-time record against the Hornets in a series that began in 1975. This year’s matchup will be the eighth time the two teams have squared off in region play.
Andalusia began its region schedule on a high note with a lopsided senior night win against Dale County, 56-6. Bullock County was doubled up at Montgomery Academy, 38-19.
The Bulldogs earned a home rout over the Hornets last season, 50-9.
Florala vs. Southern Choctaw
Florala (1-1) will take a break from region play this week and prepare for a home bout with Southern Choctaw (0-2).
The Wildcats and Indians first met during the second round of the state playoffs in 1979. This year’s game is only the second regular season contest with the series tied at 1-1.
Both teams will be looking to get back in the win column this week after falling in home shutouts last time out. Florala fell to Georgiana, 44-0, while Southern Choctaw was defeated by Millry, 54-0.
The Wildcats were rewarded for their long trip to Gilbertown and returned home with a 38-20 win over the Indians in 2022.
Opp at Providence Christian
Opp (1-2, 1-1 3A Region 2) will strive for another win in Dothan with a trip east to Providence Christian (2-1, 2-0) in another region contest.
This marks the eighth consecutive season the two teams have faced off with one another. The Bobcats have won the last three matchups and hold a 5-2 lead over the Eagles dating back to 2016.
Opp earned its first win under head coach Matt Brunson with a hard-fought 19-7 triumph at Northside Methodist last week. Providence Christian handled New Brockton on the road, 38-14.
The Bobcats squeaked past the Eagles, 20-14, at home last year.
Pleasant Home vs. McKenzie
Pleasant Home (1-1, 0-1 1A Region 2) will look to bounce back from a tough loss and host McKenzie (1-2, 0-2) in a game with each team in search of a region win.
The two teams have met on the gridiron each season since 2004. The Tigers lead the Eagles in the series 12-7.
Pleasant Home dropped a home battle to Red Level, 25-0, last week. McKenzie came up just short against Brantley, 30-28, at home.
The Eagles snapped a two-game skid in the 2022 matchup and knocked off the Tigers on the road, 25-20.
Red Level vs. Houston County
Red Level (1-1, 1-1 1A Region 2) will bid for its first home win and keep Houston County (0-3, 0-2) winless on the year in a region battle.
The Tigers and Lions first met in football during the 2004 season in the second round of the state playoffs. The series has since shifted to region play and is locked in a 2-2 tie entering this year’s game.
Red Level made the short trip to Pleasant Home and earned a 25-0 win last week. Houston County did not have the same result and stumbled at home against Elba, 49-14.
The Tigers took down the Lions in shutout fashion last season, 26-0.
Straughn vs. Clarke County
Straughn (2-0) will play its only home game in the first five weeks of the season and welcome Clarke County (1-2) in a non-region outing on senior night.
Senior football players, cheerleaders, and band members will be recognized prior to the game at approximately 6:30 p.m.
This series first began in 2002 in region action. The Tigers have a 3-0 lead all-time over the Bulldogs.
Both teams enter the game off big road wins in their region openers. Straughn took care of Daleville, 46-16, and Clarke County defeated its longtime rival Washington County, 46-19.
The Tigers traveled to Grove Hill in 2022 and picked up a 35-21 win over the Bulldogs.
