The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Unit 80 in Andalusia, sponsored scholarships for five local students to attend Girls State as well as awarding additional scholarships to four other students.

This year’s Girls State took place from Sunday, June 4, to Friday, June 9, on the campus of Troy University.

Juniors from each high school in the county were selected to learn and participate in a weeklong “laboratory of practical government, policies, and citizenship.”

The five students sponsored by the Auxiliary included:

  • Alyssa Anderson of Florala High School
  • Liz Ann Jackson of Opp High School
  • Briley Douglas of Pleasant Home School
  • Kennedy Lord of Red Level School
  • Cora Wyrosdick of Straughn High School

The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary also awarded a total of $2,000 to four college-bound students from the area.

The scholarships were awarded to the following students:

  • Chasey L. Sanders, who is attending LBW Community College
  • Julie Ann Heninger, who is attending the University of South Alabama
  • Claire N. Ledbetter, who is attending Troy University
  • Mary Madison Crenshaw, who is attending the University of South Alabama

The Ladies Auxiliary’s mission is to serve veterans, their families, and their communities. Scholarships and projects are funded by volunteering to work at the Legion’s weekly bingo games
