The City of Opp’s Parks and Recreation Department will host recreational activities for adults and children this summer.
A co-ed church softball league for ages 18 and up is planned with a six-week season scheduled to begin June 27. Games will be played on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights at 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 8 p.m.
There will be a maximum of 12 teams with at least three girls on the field per team. Registration fee is $250 with the cut off for team registration June 8. Team spots are first come first serve with several already claimed.
Teams can be reserved by contacting the Parks and Recreation Department or emailing Britt Wilson at bwilson@cityofopp.com.
“We are excited to be once again hosting the co-ed church league and excited for another fun summer in the city of Opp,” Wilson said.
A youth pickleball camp for children ages 5 to 18 will be held June 13-15 from 8 to 10 a.m. each day. Participation is $10 per person.
A youth tennis camp for children ages 5 to 18 will be held June 20-22 from 8 to 10 a.m. each day. Participation is $10 per person. Registration began May 22 at the Parks and Recreation office on 1000 Cameron Road. Those who are interested in participating may also call 334-343-8887.
The City of Opp’s swimming pool is located at Veterans Memorial Park at the corner of Park Avenue and Whaley Street. There will be four highly trained lifeguards and one pool manager present at all times.
Swimming lessons begin in June and are free to anyone wishing to conquer the art of swimming. Students will learn how to overcome the fear of water while lifeguards teach the basics of swimming and water survival skills. The pool will open on the Tuesday following Memorial Day with the cost to swim $1 per day.
Pool hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. The pool is closed on Sunday.
The department recently hosted its Dinko de Mayo Pickleball Tournament on Friday, May 5. The “Twin It to Win It” team of Caiden and Colt Harrell won the tournament. The “Beauty and the Beast” team of Meredith and Clay Ashberry took second place.
