LBW Community College names second-generation logger and business owner Kevin Kennedy as the 2023 Outstanding Alumnus and will recognize him at the annual commencement ceremony in Andalusia on May 12.
Kennedy, a 1992 graduate of Brantley High School, attended and graduated with a degree in Forestry from Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in 1995. He is the owner and President of Kennedy Logging, Kennedy Forest Products, Partners’ 5 Trucking Company, and RBKK Leasing, located in Brantley, Alabama.
He has had a passion for the timber industry since high school when he worked with his dad. After completing his degree at LBW, Kennedy was employed by Kennedy Logging and in 2001 established a land/timber procurement company, Kennedy Forest Products.
“Mr. Kennedy’s companies’ economic impact in our service area is astounding, accounting for over 60 jobs directly and countless others indirectly,” said LBW President Dr. Brock Kelley.
His passion for the timber industry goes well beyond his own companies, and he has joined with other professionals to ensure the timber industry in the state of Alabama thrives. Kennedy serves on several committees and boards across the state to help others in the forestry industry. He is a board member of the Alabama Forestry Association; Alabama Forestry Association Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama; Choctawhatchee, Pea, and Yellow Rivers Water Management Authority; Swamp Fox Insurance; Forest PAC; and a board member of the First National Bank of Dozier.
He has served as the Vice Chairman and Trustee for Alabama Forest Fund Workman’s Comp for the last 14 years.
Recently, Kennedy had the opportunity to attend a conference in Washington D.C. to speak with Senators and legislators to voice the needs of the forestry industry of Alabama.
Kennedy resides in Brantley with his wife Tracy and their two children, Natalie and Jack. He is a member of Brantley United Methodist Church.
“We are pleased to recognize Kevin Kennedy as the 2023 Outstanding Alumnus for the College for his work in the field of Forestry,” President Kelley added. “The forest industry is such a vital part of South Alabama’s economy, and it’s because of alumni like Kevin that our college and forestry program continue to grow.”
LBW’s Academic Transfer Ceremony will be held on May 12 at 10 a.m., and the Career Technical Ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at the Kiwanis Community Center located in Andalusia.
